Clean water is perhaps the single most important factor in the health of your livestock, but maintaining the ideal aquarium water quality requires continuous movement inside the tank. This applies especially to saltwater aquariums or reef aquariums, which require better oxygenation, more ideal water temperatures, and an artificial current that allows coral to trap more nutrients.
Fortunately, adding movement into your aquarium requires only the items you might normally use to create a comfortable and enjoyable environment for your livestock.
● Powerheads: Powerheads are especially effective in moving water in corners and underneath decor. Place them in areas that receive less oxygen or where you often find debris.
● Bubblers: These gem-like air stones release bubbles into the fish tank and beautify your aquarium.
● Spray bars: A spray bar is placed horizontally just below the surface of the water. It shoots water through little holes like a water sprinkler, keeping the water moving and increasing oxygen levels.
● Flow accelerators: Flow accelerators maximize the performance of your pump. For this option, however, you need a large, high-quality fish tank.
● Basic filters: We probably don’t need to tell you to add filters. You know you need them to add water movement to your tank, oxygenate the water, and remove excess impurities. We would remind you, however, to check the filters on a regular basis to make sure they’re not clogged or otherwise not functioning properly.
Another factor to consider is the quality of your plant life. Adding live or artificial plants to your tank is essential in maintaining the ideal aquarium water quality, but it’s important to keep them under control. If you have too many artificial plants or live plants become overgrown, they can crowd the tank and block water movement.
