Is RODI water necessary for reef tanks? Yes, it is! In this image, a tropical fish seems to be striking a glamorous pose.

You may be thinking, “Reef tanks need saltwater. Pure RODI water doesn’t have salt. So is RODI water necessary for reef tanks?”

As always, our answer is a resounding, “Yes!”

Using RODI water for reef tanks is like starting with a clean slate, and we will add the salt into the water for you. It’s like a secret recipe for healthy saltwater fish.

  • Start with 5 gallons of RODI water.
  • Add 2 ½ cups of high-quality aquarium salt.
  • Mix well.
  • Let your fish chill in the cool, clean water.

In fact, in some ways RODI water is more necessary for saltwater aquariums than it is for freshwater tanks, although we recommend RODI water for them as well.

Generally speaking, freshwater fish are tougher. Saltwater fish tend to be more like prima donnas with their beautiful colors, graceful swagger, and spoiled attitudes.

After all, they live in the spectacular ocean in the wild, so they couldn’t ask for anything more there. The glamorous lifestyle is in their bloodline, so you have to make them feel like stars in your tank.

With that in mind, just a touch of chemicals can make them uncomfortable or even sick.

At the very least, never, ever use tap water in or on your reef tank. That’s especially true in Arizona, where tap water can be especially harsh.

Reverse osmosis water or distilled water are decent options, but reverse osmosis deionized water is best. RO water and distilled water still have a trace of impurities, but RODI water doesn’t. That’s what the extra step of deionization does; through a scientific process that separates ions, only pure H2O remains. In other words, it removes the impurities that reverse osmosis left behind.

Best of all, with Seatech H2O, choosing the purest option is easy as well. There’s no fussing with jugs of water or completing messy water changes. Order the RODI water, choose the salt brand you prefer, and we’ll deliver it to you. Even better, we’ll simply complete the water changes for you on site if you prefer.
